The ranch of Red Ryder (Allan Lane) and his aunt, The Duchess (Martha Wentworth), is being used as the training site for "Gentleman Jim" Corbett (George Turner) for his upcoming fight in Carson City, Nevada for the heavyweight championship against Bob Fitzsimmons (John Dehner). Molly McVey (Peggy Stewart), the daughter of a U.S. Senator, crusading against prize-fighting in Nevada, complicates matters soemwhat when she conceives the bright idea of having Corbett kidnapped, thus causing the cancellation of the fight. The two men (George Chesebro and George Lloyd) she hires to do the kidnapping also add to the complications by kidnapping Ryder instead of Corbett. Meanwhile, a gang of crooks, led by McKean (Roy Barcroft), descend on the town intent on looting the town and also making off with the fight proceeds.

Monte Hale (Monte Hale), cowboy creator of the popular comic strip featuring "Outlaw", the wild horse,is as fond of the real horse as his thousands of fans are of the comic strip version. When unscrupulous rodeo promoter Colonel Winthrop (Ferris Taylor) gets the idea of capturing "Outlaw" and making him a show horse, his niece Kay North (Adrian Booth) tricks Monte into believing she is a writer assigned to do an article on the real horse. With her help, Winthrop's henchmen Tracy (Bud Geary) and Lafe (Kenne Duncan) capture the horse, thus leaving unprotected the colt, "Shadow", and the herd of mares, against the wild animals who attack them when their protector is missing. Furious at the theft of the horse, Monte goes to the Winthrop Rodeo and, with the help of his kid sister, Ginny (Jo Ann Marlowe) and Locoweed (Emmett Lynn), an elderly comic-strip fan, rescues the horse.

Gang Leader Dutch Malone (Robert Armstrong) goes on a hunting trip and is in a car wreck and is confined to the hospital, without the knowledge of any of his gang members. District Attorney Brady (William Forrest) induces taxidermist Peter Winkly (also Robert Armstrong), who is an exact double for Malone,to impersonate Dutch and assume leadership of the gang. Winkly "takes over" the gang and only Rita (Marian Martin), Dutch's girl friend, has any suspicion that he is not really Dutch. But Dutch sees a newspaper showing him out on the town, escapes from the hospital and is on his way to look up the imposter.

Kate Hilton (Christine McIntyre), returning to her ranch in Springfield via stagecoach after learning of the murder of her father (Joseph Eggerton), meets U.S. Marshal Nevada Jack McKenzie (Johnny Mack Brown). The stage is held up and robbed of the rancher's money, but Nevada manages to bring it in after the driver (Slim Whitaker) has been killed. Sandy Hopkins (Raymond Hatton), also a U.S. Marshal, is posing as a cook at the only cafe in town. Joel Edwards (Craig Woods) now running the Wells Fargo office after Hilton was killed, and Kate are in love. J. D. Edwards (Robert Frazer), president of the land-and-cattle company, and step-father to Joel, controls all the interest in Springfield. A number of citizens have been killed for no apparent reason, and Doctor Applegate (Lloyd Ingraham) has sent for Nevada and Sandy to solve the mystery killings. Applegate is killed after he returns from a prospecting trip, but not before he has deposited some of the gold he found in the Wells Fargo safe. J.D.Edwards, in reality the gang leader, means to acquire the property containing the gold that Hilton, originally, and Applegate later found. Nevada and Sandy learn of the location in time to keep the ranchers from selling to Edwards. The latter tries to shoot Nevada, but Joel draws first and kills him. The ranchers are told there is gold on their property, and the whole gang is apprehended.

In 1944, a company of German soldiers on the Russian front are numbed by the horrors and hardships of war when Private Ernst Graeber's long awaited furlough comes through.
