Shot his first feature in 1918 and went on to work with such illustrious directors as King Vidor, Henry King, Frank Capra, Alfred Hitchcock and Cecil B. DeMille. Barnes also served as a mentor to Gregg Toland, who went on to become one of Hollywood's finest cinematographers. Married to Joan Blondell from 1932 to 1936.
