Brad Crowder (Chester Morris) is co-owner in the Crowder Salvage Company with Jo Matheson (Jean Rogers), who inherited her father's share of the business. She is in love with Brad, while he thinks of her as a brat in overalls. Brad is a wolf after all the girls, especially those of his best friend Owen McCarey (Victor McLaglen.) When the war begins, Brad offers his salvage equipment and men to the Navy, provided he gets an officer's commission. The Navy isn't interested but the Army is, minus the commission, and send Brad and his men to training school for thirteen weeks. Brad has a dinner date with Jo, but breaks it when Owen bets him he can't take his latest girl, Kitty Duval (Amelita Ward.) Kitty phones while Owen is taking a shower, and Brad tells he Owen is still working but he will pick her up. By the time Owen catches up, Kitty is showing a decided preference for Brad, and Owen consoles himself with Lorine Gray (Veda Ann Borg), a Brooklyn girl pretending to be an innocent little gal from the South who wants a home and a husband. Brad returns from training to find that Jo has joined the WAC abd that Owen is about to marry Lorine. Brad, seeing that Owen is really in love, has no intention of breaking up the romance. Kitty can't make a date with Brad and sends Lorine to explain. Lorine falls for Brad and jilts Owen. Presuming that Brad has deliberately taken her, they fight and both men are badly mauled. Before the breach between them can be mended, bot are ordered overseas. Unless one has missed the other 123 versions of this plot, the only question remaining is which man will save the other's life at the risk of his own?

Reporter Connie Pearson (Constance Worth) persuades them to visit Marty Jones (Elvin Fields), a fatherless boy, who has been sent to a boy's home after stealing Steve's wallet, ran by Tom Goodwin (Forrest Taylor.) Marty tells Steve that the home is a phony and is a front for cattle rustlers. Steve passes the information on to Connie, who doesn't believe him, so he and Jimmy wire the ranch for sound. They are caught and Goodwin turns them over to Sheriff Barnes (Edmund Cobb), and then plans to skip the country. Singer/band leader Ozie Waters and his Colorado Hill-Billies are also featured.

At a meeting, Sidney Padgett (Forrest Taylor), Cannonball (Dub Taylor) and other townspeople conclude that someone is tipping the gang off on important shipments. Trent volunteers to contact the outlaws. He meets Steve and persuades him to cross to the side of the law and protect the ranchers. Steve soon suspects Padgett and tricks him into revealing his identity as the secret leader of the bandits, and in a furious battle between Steve's men and the outlaws, the former win.

Steve learns that she wants to sell the ranch to the Empire Syndicate. Paul Edwards (Lloyd Bridges), syndicate representative, plans to convert the ranch into a swank hotel-gambling operation. At a party which Jane gives for Edwards, Hiram Denton (William Gould), is murdered and Steve is accused. He and Cannonball escape before the sheriff can take them into custody, and in searching for evidence find that Jane and Edwards are married and have done the killings in order to gain the ranch.

The last entry in Columbia's series co-starring Bill Elliott and Tex Ritter (who departed for the corrals at Republic and Universal), and a remake of 1931's "The Avenger" with Buck Jones: Joaquin Murietta (Bill Elliott)is robbed of his property by Jeff Gorman (Dick Curtis) and town banker Gil Kirby (Robert Fiske) and seeks revenge by disguising himself as a masked bandit, known as The Grey Shadow,and begins to raid gold shipments intended for Gorman and Kirby. Anita Morrell (Adele Mara) arrives in town and is shocked to learn that her father has been murdered. California Ranger Tex Lake (Tex Ritter) investigates and finds clues, planted by Gorman and Kirby,implicating Murietta. Kirby, the real killer, demands $2,000 from Anita in return for the deed to her father's gold mine.Murietta comes to her, denies any involvement in the killing, and gives her the needed money. Lake is on Murietta's trail, but the two are soon united in a fight against the outlaws.

Judge Barlow put him there and Bill gets the Judge to confess. Bill learns that Rance McKee is behind all the trouble and he forces the Judge into the decisions he wants. So Bill heads out by himself to face McKee in the showdown.

Bill has foiled their schemes before and this time he breaks into Adams' office and resets the front page saying Adams confesses to be a fugitive criminal. When the citizens gather the next day the end is near for Adams and Crowley.

Powder Kilgore (Ray Bennett as Raphael Bennett) kills freighter Jeff Cameron (Edward LeSaint) and the latter's daughter, "Spunky" (Iris Meredith), sends for gunfighter Wild Bill Saunders (Bill Elliott, in another of his more than 195 films in which he was never, not once, billed as William 'Wild Bill' Elliott.) Bill finds that few men care to buck the Kilgore gang, and he gets consent from Governor Dawson (Don Beddoe) to form a state ranger's organization out of gunmen now in prison, the men to be pardoned if they prove themselves worthy. (A plot line used at least six times by writer/director Robert Emmett Tansey elsewhere in a ten year period.) Bill whips a Kilgore henchman, Lightning Barlow (Francis Walker), who is offering "Spunky" protection in return for a half-share in her freighting business. Bill jails Barlow and other Kilgore gang members when he and his "rangers" foil an attempted gold-shipment holdup. "Spunky" and her helper Cannonball (Dub Taylor) stumble on Kilgore's hideout and are taken prisoner. Bill rescues them, but Kilgore and his henchman surround the hideout.

With fences cut and livestock disappearing, Jeff Browning (Alan Bridge) suspects his new neighbor, Dan Murdock (Edward LeSaint.) Sheriff Fletcher (Jack Rockwell) appeals to the U. S. Marshal for help, and Tom Murdock (Charles Starrett), Dan's son, is sent. Tom arrives in Buffalo Springs, posing as cattle buyer Tom Morgan, with the Sons of the Pioneers (Bob Nolan, Tim Spencer, Lloyd Perryman, Hugh Farr, Karl Farr and Pat Brady) as his foreman and ranch hands. Browning's foreman, Bat Springer (Dick Curtis), is alarmed at the news of the impending sale of the Browning herd. He and Murdock's foreman, Carver (Edmund Cobb), have been rustling cattle from both ranches, changing the brands and loading them into railroad cattle cars at a distant siding. Dan discovers that the brands from both ranches have been changed to the Bar-X, a brand that is registered to Browning's son Ned (Richard Fiske.) As he is telling this to Browning, he is killed from ambush and Browning is knocked unconscious. But Tom has seen Bat steal Browning's unfired gun, the only clue to Browning's innocence, and tells his suspicions to Ned and his sister Jean (Lorna Gray). But Bat shows the sheriff a letter showing that the Bar-X brand is in Ned's name and Ned is also arrested. Tom and the sheriff set a trap for Bat and his henchmen by announcing that Ned and his father have escaped but, in reality, they have been transferred to the sheriff's home. But Bat learns of the plan and he and his partner capture Ned and Jeff and take them along as hostages on an escape to the border.

Fur trader Jules Moreaux is killed by raiders terrorizing the section patrolled by Canadian Mounties Sergeant Jim Cameron (Charles Starrett) and his brother, Constable Bob Cameron (Bob Nolan), who find Jean Duncan (Dorothy Comingore as Linda Winters) hiding in a backroom of the trading post. She says she is not sure she can identify the gang leader as Pierre Ledoux (Paul Sutton) whom the Mounties suspect. Ledoux reaches Moosehead ahead of the Mounties and reports to Mart Duncan (Robert Fiske), Jean's uncle and secret leader of the fur raiders. LeDoux is ordered to backtrack and try to kill Jean in the event she recognized him, but misses. At the suggestion of RCMP Inspector Wylie (Vernon Steele), Jean goes to work for her uncle, sees Ledoux, but Jim is forced to release him for lack of evidence. Jim is suspended from the Mounties and his actions become suspicious to both the raiders and the Mounties, he attempts to loot Moreaux's cabin and is attacked by LeDoux, there for the same purpose. Jim hides the raider when his brother shows up. Duncan, about to flee town with the raider's money, is stopped by Ledoux, now friendly to Jim. The Mounties arrest Jim for apparently trying to rob Duncan, and he is drummed out of the service and jailed. Ledoux helps him break jail and takes him to the gang's hideout where Jean is a captive.

Wade Beaumont (Dick Curtis), R. A. Kirby (Kenneth MacDonald) and Burke (Edmund Cobb), of the Caribou Trading Company, have reduced the miners and trappers almost to the point of slavery by charging them exorbitant prices for provisions. Beaumont threatens to quit and the other two are thrown in a panic, but a fistfight between Beaumont and Larry Daniels (Stanley Brown)gives Burke an idea. He stabs Beaumont with Larry's knife and RCMP Sergeant Neal Crawford (Charles Starrett)arrests Larry for murder. Neal's romantic interest in Larry's sister, Norma (Iris Meredith), makes this task difficult. Not happy at the evidence brought out in the trial, Neal takes a leave of absence and begins his own investigation. He ties up the gold at the trading company until a successor to Beaumont is appointed, and thus keeps Burke and Kirby from absconding with the gold. Norma and Neal see the crooks burn the evidence that will free Larry. Burke, Kirby and Jacques LaRue (Albert Morin) clean out the vault and ride away, but are pursued by Neal and the Mounties.

Undercover agent Mark Owens (Charles Quigley) is sent to aid the Border Patrol in the trans-border town of Hernandez in breaking up a well-organized band of smugglers. Since the town is also noted for a place for obtaining quick marriages on the Mexico side, Mark obtains the job of pilot on "The Honeymoon Express." He does not realize that he has been recognized as a G-Man by "Hot Cake" Joe (Herbert Heywood), operator of a sandwich stand and an informant for the smugglers. Reporter Nancy Rawlings (Rosalind Keith), assigned to the airport on the American side of the border, sees Mike running the matrimonial express in his flamboyant uniform, and thinks he is ridiculous enough to make a good story. Her suspicions are aroused when he refuses to be photographed. She is further convinced he is a smuggler when she sees him accepting money from Kurt Feldon (Russell Hicks), suspected head of the smugglers. Feldon has accepted Mike as a genuine pilot for wedding parties and is paying him to steer customers to his cafe. Learning the truth from Joe, Feldon orders his henchman/flyer Blast Reardon (Marc Lawrence)to get rid of Mike. Blast, with a gang moll as his accomplice, charters Mike to fly them across the border to get married. A waitress at the airport, who Nancy has bribed to watch Mike's activities, tips her off about the flight and Nancy hides in the plane. Once in the air, Blast forces Mike to land at the smuggler's hideout, where he is imprisoned.

Let's start with some house cleaning first. Columbia produced a series of Charles Starrett westerns that they called "Peter B. Kyne productions" but, other than allowing the use of his name, writer Peter B. Kyne was not the producer on any of the films in this series, and didn't even write the few he is credited with by some sources. Since the source for this error is one of those often-used and often-wrong sources that many researchers use, and said source is one of those that never bother correcting the multitude of errors in their catalogs, the chances of some uninformed source adding Peter B. Kyne back to this film as the Producer is highly likely. This Harold Shumate story finds Texas ranch-foreman Steve Braddock (Charles Starrett) in charge of driving a large herd of cattle overland from Texas to Dodge City, Kansas. Slim Grayson (Donald Grayson), the eastern-educated son of the ranch owner, is along to sing songs around the campfire. The trail drive part only lasts until the herd reaches Plainview, where Steve, Slim and the cowhands rescue Marian Phillips (Marion Weldon) after she has been kidnapped off a stage by a gang led by Dawson (Alan Bridge). She tells Steve her father is a local rancher named Phillips, who she has not seen since she was a young girl, but Steve knows no rancher by that name but from her description, he feels sure that Plainview gambling-hall owner Kenyon Jackson (Russell Hicks) is her father. Of course he is and he, of course, is also the secret head of the Dawson gang, and Steve's tasks are to keep Marian from learning the truth about her father, cleaning up the gang and persuading the father to reform. By the way, Peter B. Kyne did not produce this film.

In this Charles Starrett western that WAS NOT produced by Peter B. Kyne and was solely written by Ford Bebee, although some sources attribute the story to Peter B. Kyne because, with his permission and as a selling angle, the title shown on the film and all of the posters is "Peter B. Kyne's CODE OF THE RANGE." The use of his name was Mr. Kyne's only contribution. Ford Beebe's "original screenplay" (he had used it before) finds the cattlemen, headed by "Calamity" Parker (Allan Cavan), opposing the use of their range lands by sheep herders, with cattlemen Lee Jamison (Charles Starrett) and Ed Randall (Edmund Cobb) in the dissenting minority and they offer sheepman Angus McLeod (Edward Coxen as Ed Coxen) free grazing privileges. Saloon owner Barney Ross (Albert J. Smith) offers to keep the sheepmen off of the range and out of town if each cattleman will pay $500. They agree after he promises there will be no bloodshed. Ross then visits bank clerk Quigley (Ralph McCullough), who Ross knows has stolen bank funds to cover his gambling losses at Ross' saloon, and forces him to forge the name of bank president Adams (Edward LeSaint) on a foreclosure notice on Jamison's ranch. Ross then buys Jamison's property thereby making it impossible for the sheep-herders to use the land for grazing. Calamity's daughter Janet (Mary Blake) works at the bank and is engaged to Jamison but they have parted because of a quarrel over the feud. But when Jamison learns that his property has been "legally" stolen, Mary, who suspects Ross and Quigley, aids him by wiring Adams to return immediately. Jamison, suspecting that Ross will have his henchmen take Adams off the stagecoach and kill him, beats the gang to the stagecoach, takes Adams and hides him. But Jamison has to flee town when Ross tells the townsmen that Jamison took Adams off the stage and killed him. But he will return.

Anthony Halliday (Ralph Bellamy), brillant young surgeon, is forced to resign as chief of staff at a New York hospital when he is compelled to delay an appendectomy on the daughter of John Mitchell(Stanley Andrews), wealthy supporter of the hospital, because of an emergency operation he has to perform. The appendectomy is successful, but later complications cause the girl's death. Carol Andrews (Joan Perry), his fiancee, regards him as a failure and leaves him. Halliday, suffering from amnesia brought on by the shocks, drifts to Scranton, Pa.,where he gets work in the steel mill. He only remembers who he is when he finds himself bandaging some injured workers. The mill doctor, Miller (Edward LeSaint), asks him to become his assistant. Halliday remains at the mill under the name of John Davis. Because of many accidents at the mill, the smelter boss, Joe Kosovic (Fredrik Vogeding) is demoted. He becomes friendly with Halliday and invites him home for dinner, where he becomes attracted to Gerta (Gloria Shea), Joe school-teacher daughter. Accidents increase at the mill, and the mill's safety and personnel man, Brant (Fred Kohler), is ordered to investigate. Brant is actually in the pay of a rival firm trying to shut the mill. In school, Gerta hears Danny Brant (Georgie Billings) talking about a game called "Steel-Mill" that has a point of dropping bricks on people's heads. He sullenly refuses to tell Gerta that his father's conversations with his conspirators inspired it. Gerta inform Halliday about it, and he begins to investigate Brant's activities.
