His most prominent TV role was playing the husband of Dr. Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) in the HBO mob drama "The Sopranos." He has also appeared in a number of motion pictures, such as 1993's "Point of No Return," where he acts in a pivotal scene with the movie's star, Bridget Fonda, and the ominous Cleaner played by Harvey Keitel. His voice can be heard in animated feature films, including the adult-oriented cult classic "Heavy Metal," where he plays the lead role in the Harry Canyon segment. His most significant critical success came in the form of a Writers Guild of America Award nomination for the Lifetime original film he co-wrote and co-produced, "If You Believe."
