Easy Come, Easy Go (1947) as Boss
A film that possibly held the record for the most Irish-descent players in an American-produced movie before "The Quiet Man" was shot on location in Ireland, and that includes "The Informer." Barry Fitzgerald is a rapid fan of following the ponies (but none too good at picking the winners)and owns a shabby boarding house east of NYC's Third Avenue. Mostly, he never works, follows his hunches, philosphizes through most of the 77 minutes and changes the life course for most of those around him. His dependence upon his daughter (Diana Lynn) keeps him interfering with her romance with a returning WW II sailor (Sonny Tufts, just before Paramount finally gave up on him.) And he will stretch the truth beyond accepted boundaries. Fitzgerald's real-life brother Arthur Sheilds plays his brother who he has built up to be a rich man, but who is really a diver working for the police department. Could have been a ten if there had been a leprechaun or two or Pat O'Brien in the cast.

They then get mixed up with a potential suicide Lucia, who first thanks them, then unexpectedly turns them over to the ship's captain. When they find out that she has been hypnotised, to go through a marriage of convenience, when the ship reaches Rio, the boys turn up at the ceremony, in order to stop the wedding, and to help catch the crooks.

The National Barn Dance (1944) as Part of musical team
Made at the time when the National Barn Dance program, on radio station WLS (for World's Largest Store and owned by Sears & Roebuck) in Chicago, was as big on a national scale listening audience as "The Grand Ole Opry" out of Nashville. The film highlights the leading acts then performing on the program; comedian Pat Buttram, announcer Joe Kelly (before his Quiz Kids stint), Lulubelle & Scotty (Scott Wiseman and wife Myrtle), the Dinning Sisters trio, Arkie the Arkansas Wood Chooper (Luther W. Osenbrink) and the Hoosier Hot Shots quartet, whose musical abilities and creativity were vastly underrated. The piffle of a story begins in the early days of radio (Calvin Cooledge was President) but otherwise seems to take place in 1944, which made things easier on the Art and Set directors. Agent John Berke (Charles Quigley) thinks advertising executive Mitcham (Robert Benchley) wants to put together a program of hillbilly performers---a term used until later years when Nashville went uptown and changed it to Country & Western---and hies himself down to a country town where Lulubelle (Myrtle Wiseman) & Scotty (Scott Wiseman) hold a barn dance in their barn every Saturday night featuring themselves and their farm hands, although it is not quite clear just what chores the Dinning Sisters perform. He signs all hands to a contract, brings them to Chicago and learns that Mitcham has no intentions of putting together such a program to be sponsored by the Garvey Soup Company owned by the Garveys (Charles Dingle and Mabel Paige). A bit of plot contrivance---a small bit--- changes all of that, and the National Barn Dance is born.

Not thinking it through, Jane cancels their hotel reservations when she feels the accomodations are inadequate. With no rooms available in the entire city Lee and Jane pose as a married couple and take positions as maid and butler in the Cromwell's home until the contract can be secured.

They do accept an offer of ten dollars to sing at a dubious night club on the edge of town where a band led by Happy Marshall (Fred MacMurray) is playing. Bobby takes the ten dollars and runs it up to $190 at the dice table. Happy hits on Nancy but she rebuffs him. He doesn't have the money to pay his band and borrows the gambling winnings from Bobby on the pretext that he will give her a job with his band. Bobby discovers the next day that Happy has hastily departed for New York. The girls follow to a night club where he is working and, after an audition, the manager is willing to give Happy a contract if the girls will sing with his band.

Salute for Three (1943) as Soldier friend with Buzz
Press agent Jimmy Gates (Marty May) gets an idea while watching a New York parade, for a returned war hero Sergeant Buzz McAllister (Macdonald Carey), with his chief client, singer Judy Ames (Betty Rhodes); Dona Drake (Dona Drake), leader of an all-girl orchestra; his photographer Foggy (Cliff Edwards), and his secretary Myrt (Minna Gombell). Jimmy, thinking Judy needs publicity in order to get a singing job on a radio program, thinks that a romance between her and the war hero would be just the ticket. Judy isn't too warm on the idea but agrees to go ahead for Jimmy's sake, with whom she thinks she is in love. She agrees to work on Buzz that night at the Manhattan Canteen, a converted night club where show business people entertain and wait on service men. Foggy is assigned to get pictures of Judy and Buzz together but fails through ineptness. Buzz escorts Judy home in a rainstorm and, while helping her out of the taxi, slips and falls into a deep puddle. Judy asks him to come in so she can dry his soaking-wet uniform on the kitchen stove. Foggy gains entrance to the apartment via the dumbwaiter and snaps a picture of Buzz in his underwear. The next morning Buzz tells Jimmy that he intends to marry Judy, which is going further than he had intended. He also decides he can't use the compromising - but innocent - photo for publicity purposes but does announce their - he thinks - publicity-only engagement. That clinches the deal for Judy to get a radio program called "The Girl I Left Behind." Buzz proposes to Judy, who realizes she loves Buzz and not Jimmy, and they, not knowing that Jimmy has announced their "engagement", decide to keep it a secret.
Star Spangled Rhythm (1943) as Soldier in "That Old Black Magic" number
Pop, a security guard at Paramount has told his son that he's the head of the studio. When his son arrives in Hollywood on shore leave with his buddies, Pop enlists the aid of the studio's dizzy switchboard operator in pulling off the charade. A remake of Monogram's 1934 "City Limits" with practically all of the character role names the same as in the earlier film, and the primary difference here is that the author of the original story, Jack Woodford, receives no mention here. George Waggner (as Joseph West),who adapted the story for the first film, takes an "original screenplay" credit here with no nod in the direction of the man who wrote the story in the first place. A glance at a few Universal B-westerns Waggner "wrote" for Bob Baker will find that the majority of them had also been written before by other writers, mostly in the John Wayne Lone Star westerns. Edmond Kelso's additional dialogue credit must have been for the interplay between Frank Faylen's and Charlie Hall's hobo characters, especially when Faylen starts explaining why the sixty-cent dollar is still worth a dollar in a 40-year precursor to voo-doo economics. Story concerns railroad tycoon J.B. Matthews (Jed Prouty) taking over a rival line, being sent on an R&R vacation by his doctor, falling off his private train-car and landing in a hobo jungle occupied by Faylen and Hall, and being cured of all his ills, while reporter Jimmy Dugan (Frank Albertson) poses as a doctor in order to get an exclusive story about the railroad takeover.
