The Last Time I saw Paris

a beautiful picture. gorgeous Technicolor cinematography. classic title song by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein Jr.superb acting by Elizabeth Taylor.
Nothing's wrong with the picture.
If you are a person who loves a good story, acted out excellently, no-thing is wrong with this picture. The music was great. Cinematography was gorgeous. My mom, who died at age 92, I am sure said, "This is a beautiful movie." I say the same.It is true. No action. No special effects. No computerized sequences. No loud volume to blast out your eardrums are contained in this movie.What we do have is a human story, showing how selfishness, abuse of alcohol, and poor life choices over time, can destroy a family, and even life itself. But pure, unselfish love, from the heart, with no strings attached, fueled by commitment is a beautiful thing indeed. This is a fine example of a classic film. This film surely deserves a much higher score than it got.
What's wrong with this picture?
The Last Time I Saw ParisThe first part of this movie was richly beautiful and enjoyable. Beautifl colorful cinematography & music & joie de vivre. Then all of a sudden the leading man Van Johnson turns into a complete shmuck,and stupidly neglects his awesomely beautiful & totally devoted wife, neglects her so badly that she dies of pneumonia, because he was too stinkin drunk to drive her home and she had to walk in a heavy rainstorm, got sick and died. Doesn't make sense, all of a sudden he turns into a dumb-down asshole, because he got a couple of rejection slips for his novel. Doesn't make sense and the movie just becomes a miserable boring deeeepressing drag. Then Van Johnson comes back and gets his daughter back even though he's totally unfit to be a father. Van Johnson is very likable and a pretty good actor. I don't think it's necessarily his fault that his character all of a sudden turns into a totally unsympathetic creep. Must be in the writing and the editing. There's no feasible motivation for him to become a totally different totally negative and unsympathetic character. Elizabeth Taylor is so beautiful and so full of life and fun and real true love she definitely deserved a better-written script and a better-edited film. I would have to give the first part of this movie 5 stars, but after Van for-no-good-reason--turns into a boombaklodt and destroys his beautiful loving wife--for-no-good-reason, the movie just loses all credibility, and becomes a bummer, maudlin and morose. But Elizabeth is increasingly genuinely beautiful throughout no-matter-what, She's so good, she transcends all the bad writing and credibility gaps. It's still worthwhile, because Elizabeth is just so transcendently beautiful, so genuinely good and virtuous a humanbeing!

Classic example of how a fatal bit of miscasting can take everything down with it. I'm talking of course about the very amiable Van Johnson being asked to play a self pitying, alcoholic, self destructive F. Scott Fitzgerald type of writer. It's a part that cries out for Montgomery Clift or even, if you want to go more mainstream, Kirk Douglas, but Van Johnson, with his easy, song and dance man's likability and uncomplicated face is about as tortured and self loathing as the guy who bags your groceries. Plus, because he is not a very good actor, in addition to being wrong for the part, Johnson does not know how to do drunken-ness and thus hams it up, with exaggeratedly slurred speech and lots of lurching around. And since he is the main character (he's in 90% of the movie) his bad performance throws everything out of whack, which is a shame, since Liz Taylor, in the Zelda role, is pretty good, resisting the temptation to play it crazy, but rather going for and achieving a charming irresponsibility inherited from her father (Walter Pidgeon, good as always.) Give it a C.
Watch for George Dolenz
This is the typical melodramatic stuff soap operas are made of. That being said, Liz Taylor's extraordinary beauty is still at its peak here (she was pregnant during filming), and George Dolenz (father of the Monkees' Micky Dolenz) delivers a most memorable, heartrending performance. I wish Dolenz had been featured more prominently--it might have made the difference between "good" and "better."
I just watched this movie and truthfully it is hard to sympathize with the main characters. First of all Liz Taylor's character knows that her sister is in love with Van and he did show interest back but she decides to worm her way in. Second, Van let himself be taken in by it and then look how she acts later. So, really, it's all their own fault for all the misery. I truthfully felt sorry for the sister in the beginning because of what her sister did to her but at the same time, she shouldn't have let herself become bitter about it and I'm glad in the end she's happy with her husband and let's go of the bitterness.
Hard to Sympathize with Main Characters

It's very hard to sympathize with the main characters, given their selfishness. Not only do they not seem to lack true feelings towards each other, but their indifference to their daughter is shameful. Not a movie I'd care to see again.
Great Love Story

This is one of my favorite Liz Taylor movies. She is terrific. Van Johnson isn't too bad either. Of course, the story itself keeps my interest.
