I so enjoyed this wonderful film. What a charming and quirky performance by Beatrice Lillie! I agree with a previous post that suggests that if she had made more films in the silent era she might be mentioned in the same category as Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd. She is a joy to behold.Disagree with another posts which dislikes the score. I found it to be a great enhancement to the enjoyment of the film and quite beautiful in its own right.Thank You TCM as always and thank you for WatchTCM on mobile and on Web!!

That's what Chaplin himself called Bea Lillie after seeing this. The moving ending is rather "City Lights" level, the only time in her sparse film career Bea was called on to act and she delivers, a la Chaplin. Love that TCM rescued this, but one major complaint - the score, which was a TCM contest winner, is completely inappropriate for the film, doesn't serve it at all. My suggestion - watch it and play a CD of Jelly Roll Morton, preferably the restored piano rolls. Even random music that is right better than the heavy and sad score attached to this film now. I hope TCM will fix this at some future date, it really is one of the great classic silents and deserves better.

Exit smiling offers up one of the best, if not THE best, female comic performance in movie history. If you like the old I Love Lucy TV show then I would say this is right up your alley. It is sad for us that this is her only starring role. If she had made more movies of equal quality we would be saying Chaplin, Keaton, LLoyd and Lillie.
