John Flinders is the imposing warden of Red Rock Prison. When hardened prisoner Mike Sullivan is transferred to Red Rock, the guards and prisoners instinctively fear him. To their surprise, Sullivan and Flinders knew each other years before when both were criminals in Mexico. Flinders was caught, and while serving time in San Francisco, he decided to go straight. Meanwhile, Sullivan continued with cattle rustling and armed robbery, until eventually he was sentenced for life on a murder charge.

Upon the request of a soon-to-be-executed prisoner, Flinders agrees to return his wedding ring to his Mexican wife, Maria McVale, and immediately finds himself attracted to her. From the example of his good friend, Sheriff Selwyn Church, who still mourns the loss of his wife of 32 years, Flinders understands how hard it is to find a special woman and ponders that maybe Maria is the one for him.

When Sullivan breaks out of the prison, Flinders must ignore his personal life and rally a posse to recapture the escapee. After days of tracking him through rugged terrain, Flinders finally corners Sullivan and refuses to allow their previous friendship to cloud his judgment. Sullivan might reminisce about the past, but Flinders realizes the future is where his heart belongs. After returning Sullivan to prison, Flinders immediately goes to Maria's house. He may be dedicated to his job as the warden, but he also wants to share his life with the woman he loves.
