This is my all-time favorite movie - the actors are perfectly cast, the characters are given exactly the right amount of delineation, the setting is great. The subject of this movie is one that could easily be overplayed and stereotyped but the delicate and realistic portrayals are perfect. If I sound enamored of this movie it is because I am. I watch it three or four times a year and show it to as many friends as possible. The soundtrack is incredible "americana roots" and never intrudes, the movie is dramatic and funny, there are many layers to it and you will see a few more each time you watch it. It's a realistic portrayal of depression era life, with white and black living, well off and poor, shown honestly but with no exaggeration. There is no agenda behind it and the aspects of life it portrays are sympathetic and honest. I LOVE THIS MOVIE. Watch it from the very beginning opening credits and listen to the music. The photography is beautiful and evocative, the music is perfect, actors are wonderful, story line is full of subtle aspects which as I mentioned before, you won't catch the first time you see it (at least I didn't). Very interesting scene where the young Shadrach is being called home by his long-dead family. Awesome movie.
