Richard Dorian cannot take anything seriously, including his marriage, so he and his wife decide on a divorce. To come up with the proper grounds, they throw a party so that Richard can brutalize his wife in front of witnesses, but during the festivities, Mrs. Dorian's guardian upstages the couple by killing himself. Richard suspects his wife of murder, but makes the evidence implicate himself and then runs away. Smugglers shanghai Richard as well as his servant, Puck, who tells him of his wife's innocence. The men escape and Richard accidentally encounters his wife, who learns that he did not kill her guardian. Then they discover that they really do love each other, but only needed to experience some hardship in order to realize it.
