To celebrate the birth of his baby girl, Ed Andrews goes to a local bar with his friend George Gardner. While drinking, George is provoked into a fist fight by Jim Matthews, the brother of Tom Matthews, a former ardent suitor of Ed's wife Dora, and accidentally delivers a fatal blow to Jim's head. Frightened, George bolts from the scene, leaving Ed to take the blame. Because of false, damaging testimony given by a jealous Tom, Ed is found guilty and sentenced to die. The shocking news kills Dora, and only the determined efforts of his mother save Ed from execution. After twenty years of imprisonment, Ed receives a pardon from the Governor and is released from jail. While lunching with his daughter, who is engaged to Tom Matthews' son, Ed witnesses a boating accident and attempts a rescue. Arriving too late, Ed identifies the drowned victim as Tom Matthews and senses that a higher justice finally has been won.
