Paul Dumont, a lieutenant in the French Foreign Legion, is enroute to his post as special advisor to a Sengali parachute batallion in Algeria when he meets and falls in love with Helene Laroche, a fellow passenger aboard his ship. When the ship docks, however, Helene disappears, and Paul travels to his post, where he is greeted by his close friend Jean, a captain in the Legion who also happens to be Helene's fiancé. Helene, who has come to the post to marry Jean, renounces her feelings for Paul as a shipboard romance. Before the wedding, Paul and Jean are sent on a training mission and are attacked by Ben Ali, the younger brother of the Arab leader, Abdullah. In the attack, Jean is wounded and Ben Ali is captured and sentenced to die. As Jean recuperates in the hospital, Paul escorts Helene into town, where their feelings for each other are rekindled. Unable to contain her feelings any longer, Helene confesses her love for Paul to Mrs. Fouchet, the commandant's wife, and then goes to meet Paul at the bazaar. There, Helene sees the Arabs stockpiling arms, and Abdullah orders her and Paul taken hostage and executed as revenge for the death of his brother. Back at the post, Jean learns from Mrs. Fouchet of Helene's love for Paul, but his sense of honor dictates that he go to their rescue. Commanding Paul's paratroopers, Jean attacks Abdullah's headquarters, and in the ensuing battle, he sacrifices his own life for those of the lovers.
