Among The Worse Ever
The Silver Stinker AKA Newman wasn't kidding......
Bad screenplay embarrasses all players. To compensate for the screenplay, the actors overact leading to way too much ham on screen which is probably ok because the sets look like they were painted by a high school art class. Which still isn't bad because they need to be muted to highlight the costumes and makeup that was applied by the HS home Economics classes. But then when you realize it's pretty not-so-hot, let's get an overwhelmingly BAD film score to play over the action to make the audience forget their money. The picture is an embarrassment. On a scale of 1-100, this is a 24.
It's so bad, it's good!
- John Burgeson
We happened to catch the last hour of "Silver Chalice" what it was shown on TCM on Easter Sunday. It really made the holiday a memorable one! Cheesy sets that looked like wallboard painted in the style of the late 1950s, crowd scenes that were painted backdrops, nutty dialogue, wooden characters (except for Jack Palance, who was one of the few who didn't mail in his performance), Roman soldiers marching this way and that, a silver chalice that seemed like it weighed almost nothing (was it styrofoam?), the list is endless. Then there was Virginia "Pass the Ham" Mayo who climbs the tower's aluminum ladder near the end, but we don't get to see her plop to the pavement. Move aside "Plan 9," "Chalice" is the new worst movie of all time! Not to be missed!
Lives up to its billing

This is every bit as bad as it's cracked up to be. How did they get so many competent actors to be in it?Peel Easter eggs instead.

This crap is an insult to Christians to have on Easter
I don't know how Newman could trash the film....he cashed his paycheck, right?I mean, how would you accept a role and then insult the effort...it's hardly fair to other actors who worked on the project. That would be all other personnel who were involved with the production. SHAME
the gospel of paul newman
when the star of the movie ..at the time ..it comes out ..says ..sorry it stinks.. either he is messed up in the head.. or being very honest. I think he thought he was being honest at the time.
Keep In Mind
When reading the review for this film, keep in mind that the New York stage was filled with actors who leaned far, far, far left-- the communist style. There idea of religion was that it was poison for the masses. So negativity was to be expected. This like any film has some interesting parts and some not so interesting but don't expect a fair review from the likes of Paul Newman who was from the New York stage.
What's impressive about the film is its stark, non-naturalistic visual setting. There is a real beauty here, reminiscent of German expressionism in its lonely representation of Rome in its spiritual poverty. Yes, Paul can't act, but how is this film any different from his others? It's all about Paul---and it's a bore.
Palane performance only reason to watch this mess
Back in the old days when I was much younger, this film was a big deal for anyone who was born and raised a Roman Catholic. At the time, I thought it inspiring. Today, it's pure schmalz fiction. Please! That silver headband and white dress on Pier Angeli was so over the top that it makes me retch. The real star of this film is Jack Palance and he gives a performance indicative of the roles he would come to play in later years. I love him in this film, as he brings an evil greed to it that is amazing. I can certainly see why Newman apologized for his role in this film. He is horrible in it and his acting is atrocious, completely different from later years when he dropped a lot of the Lee Strasberg stuff and let his personality come out!
Filme nota 10
Excelent religious film

I worked at the Stanley theater in Philadelphia when this film was released. I had the ability to go into any Warner Brothers theater for free and bring whom ever I wished. This of all the films released that year was my familes and friends favorite. I think Paul Newman disliked this film over all is because many in Hollywood are anti-religious.
a great movie actor's debut

I suggest that even though Mr Newman felt it necessary to apologise for the shortcomings of his role in the film of Costain's THE SILVER CHALICE now that he has gone from us it is imperative that his film debut be treasured and available to those of us who would love to see it.
